Special Election 2011: Oregon's 1st Congressional District

What is this election and why is it happening?

When former Congressman David Wu submitted his notice of resignation to Governor John Kitzhaber, Federal law mandated that the Governor set dates for a Special Election to fill the vacancy in Congress. At this time, Oregon's First Congressional District is not represented in Congress, and it will not be represented until this Special Election has been completed.

State Senator Suzanne Bonamici won the Democratic primary on November 6, 2011, and is the Democratic nominee.

Who will vote in this election?

Because this Special Election is constitutionally designed to give citizens of Oregon's First Congressional District representation in Congress until the next regular election (in November 2012), people who are registered to vote in the First Congressional District under its current boundaries (not the new, adjusted boundaries that will take effect for the 2012 election) will be able to vote in this election.

What are the important dates? When are ballots coming?

Special general ballots will be mailed starting January 13th, and the final day to submit ballots for the Special General Election will be January 31st.
