Councilor Karen Mellin
Karen Mellin moved to Astoria with her family in 1951. She attended Astor Elementary for the fourth grade, then Lewis and Clark (Central), and graduated from Astoria High School in 1960. She became interested in government after being chosen to attend Girl's State in 1959. She attended Oregon State University from 1960-62, then transferred to the University of Oregon, graduating in 1965 with a B.A. in English with co-minors in Secondary Education and French. After 20 years living elsewhere, Mellin returned to Astoria in 1980 with her two children. She has worked as a teacher and counselor, and was elected to the Board of Directors of Clatsop Community College for two terms, in 2001 and 2005. She is a member of many community organizations that focus on preserving and promoting quality of life in Astoria. She enjoys being grandmother to her daughter's three children.
