Mayor Julie Manning

Julie Jones Manning was born in Vancouver, Washington, and attend public schools in Vancouver and in the Mount Hood area. She graduated from Sandy Union High School in 1975 and received a bachelor’s degree in communications with honors from Lewis & Clark College in Portland in 1979.

After college, Julie taught high school journalism and television classes at Wilson High School in Portland for two years before moving to Boston to attend graduate school at Boston University. She received a master’s degree in print journalism from B.U. in 1982 and worked as the features editor for the Helena (Mont.) Independent-Record newspaper before returning to Oregon to serve as assistant press secretary for Oregon Governor Vic Atiyeh.

In 1983, Julie returned to Lewis & Clark College and spent two years as a visiting instructor in the Department of Commuincations, teaching courses in mass media and journalism. Julie moved to Corvallis in 1985 and was hired as Good Samaritan Hospital’s first full-time public relations and resource development professional.

Julie has spent the past 25 years at Good Sam and now oversees public relations, marketing and fundraising activities for the five-hospital network known as Samaritan Health Services. Julie married Walter Manning in Portland in 1984. Walter is a dentist with a private practice in Albany. They have two sons: Jackson, who works in advertising in New York City; and Patrick, who is a full-time student at Oregon State University.
