DPO Press Releases

May 1, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jill Thorn, Democratic Party of Oregon Vice Chair.

Jill served as the Vice Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon since 2007.  She was also Chair of the Clackamas County Democrats from 2000-2012, and Chair of multiple committees of the state party.  She was a member of the City Council and became a three term Mayor of West Linn, Oregon.

March 15, 2012

Portland, Ore. -- Meredith Wood Smith, Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon, released the following statement today upon learning that the Oregon Republican Party had canceled its planned March 19 presidential primary debate:

“From the day it was announced to much attention and fanfare, this GOP presidential debate was wholly welcomed by the Democratic Party of Oregon. Democrats were interested, albeit skeptical, to learn whether Mitt Romney and his fellow candidates had anything of substance to offer Oregonians.

March 12, 2012

Portland, Ore. -- Today, Meredith Wood Smith, Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon, released the following statement after it was reported that Mitt Romney would not participate in a GOP presidential debate scheduled for March 19 in Portland:

“We had hoped to hear that Mitt Romney had something, anything to offer Oregonians. Instead, we got exactly what the rest of middle-class America can expect from Romney: lip service now and the promise of answers tomorrow.

March 6, 2012

Today marks the filing deadline for Oregon candidates to run for elected office in 2012, and Democrats are confident that the strength of their lineup in key statewide, legislative, county and municipal races will translate to big gains in this election year. With majorities at stake in the House and Senate, Democrats are putting forward winning candidates with fresh ideas to grow the economy and real solutions for middle-class Oregonians. Republicans, meanwhile, are intent on advancing a narrow ideological agenda with the same failed policies that voters have consistently rejected.

March 6, 2012

With a full lineup of candidates now set for 2012 races, Oregon Democrats are seeing every indication of a very successful year ahead.

March 1, 2012

Meredith Wood Smith, Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon, released the following statement decrying Mitt Romney's war on women, evidenced by his support for the "Blunt Amendment" – a measure voted on today in the U.S. Senate that would allow an employer to deny female employees health coverage because of that employer's beliefs.

February 9, 2012

After opening the legislative session with the promise of good-faith bipartisanship, House Republicans’ decision to walk away from badly needed homeowner assistance has left many Oregonians questioning whether the party has anything but lip service to offer middle-class families.

January 31, 2012

Portland, Ore. -- Tonight, Meredith Wood Smith, Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon, released the following statement on Suzanne Bonamici’s victory in the special election for Oregon’s 1st Congressional District:

January 24, 2012

Tonight, Meredith Wood Smith, Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon, released the following statement in response to President Obama's third State of the Union address:

“Tens of thousands across Oregon tuned in to the State of the Union address tonight looking for presidential leadership – they were not disappointed. I am proud of President Obama, not just for articulating the economic inequality felt by so many middle-class Americans, but also for presenting a real blueprint for an economy that’s built to last.

January 18, 2012

As Rob Cornilles continues to spread blatant falsehoods about Suzanne Bonamici, now with the coordinated backing of the national Republican party, the Democratic Party of Oregon is calling attention to Cornilles’ favorite lie about himself: his job creation claims.

Since he launched his first campaign for Congress in 2009, Cornilles has had a habit of using big numbers to make his business credentials sound credible; but as independent news outlets have looked into his inflated claims, Cornilles has been forced to duck, dodge and--in some cases --lie outright.

January 18, 2012

Today, Oregon House Republicans announced their agenda for the upcoming legislative session: give more tax breaks to the wealthy and overturn the will of Oregon voters. The proposal, by their own math, would cost nearly $4 billion over five years, forcing cuts to vital services for students, seniors and middle-class families. In every way, their approach reflects the same priorities of the Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, whose gridlock-first agenda has hurt our economy and done nothing to create jobs.

December 16, 2011

Portland, Ore. -- Today, the Democratic Party of Oregon released a new video that exposes the real business record of congressional candidate Rob Cornilles. Cornilles has run his campaign as a small business job creator, but recent news reports about his sports marketing business, Game Face, show a record full of exaggerations, half-truths and cover-ups.

December 16, 2011

A very bad week for Republican Rob Cornilles was capped today with the first public poll of the general election showing him 11 points down to Suzanne Bonamici. Investigative reports from Willamette Week and the Oregonian surfaced this week calling into question Cornilles’ business credentials, job creation claims and hypocrisy on tax breaks.

December 15, 2011

Investigative reports this week have revealed many inconsistent statements made by Rob Cornilles. The latest: As a candidate Cornilles says that tax breaks, credits and loopholes are a problem and it's unfair that “only the powerful get to take advantage” of those tax breaks. Yet Cornilles himself has received such tax breaks and just this year lobbied city officials to back a development proposal eligible for millions more in tax breaks.

A look at the hypocrisy by the numbers:

December 14, 2011

Portland, Ore. – Less than two months after a spate of headlines forced Republican Rob Cornilles to defend his business’ failure to pay federal taxes, two separate investigative reports—published today in Willamette Week and in yesterday’s Oregonian—offer startling new details about the company and its management under Cornilles.

December 12, 2011

Today, the Democratic Party of Oregon officially notified Secretary of State Kate Brown of the three candidates nominated for the vacant Senate District 17 seat previously held by Suzanne Bonamici, now a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in the 1st Congressional District.

Democratic Precinct Persons (PCP) in the senate district held their nominating convention last night, voting unanimously at the outset to put forward three candidates. The PCPs then selected Rep. Chris Harker, Elizabeth Steiner Hayward and Paul Terdal in three rounds of voting.

December 1, 2011

It may surprise Oregon voters that there’s at least one issue where Republican Rob Cornilles hasn’t tried to run from from his Tea Party roots—unfortunately for women in the 1st district, it’s a big one: the right for women to make their own health care decisions.

November 27, 2011

In the first televised debate of the general election for Oregon’s 1st Congressional District, Suzanne Bonamici repeatedly outlined for voters why her strong record of standing up for consumers, protecting seniors’ hard-earned benefits, and fighting for middle-class Oregonians is better suited for the district than Republican Rob Cornilles’ say-anything-to-win empty political rhetoric.

November 15, 2011

Hours after becoming the Republican nominee for Oregon’s 1st district, Rob Cornilles proved beyond any doubt exactly how far he’ll sink as he tries again to get himself elected to Congress. His baffling attacks against Suzanne Bonamici on Medicare -- cookie-cutter Republican talking points repackaged -- left many wondering whether Cornilles has anything to offer Oregonians but empty political rhetoric.

November 14, 2011

Oregon Democrats are preparing to send 84 delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, to be held the week of September 3, 2012. Delegates will be selected through an election process open to any Democrat in Oregon.

“We are committed to sending a delegation to the national convention that reflects the diversity of the Democratic Party in Oregon, and we will ensure a fair selection process that’s open to any registered Democrat,” said Meredith Wood Smith, Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon.

November 2, 2011

Today, the Democratic Party of Oregon released a new video and website entitled “The Real Rob Cornilles” that expose some of the lies Tea Party congressional candidate Rob Cornilles is peddling to Oregon voters. Cornilles has falsely claimed he is not a millionaire, is running away from his self-proclaimed status as “the original Tea Party candidate” and continues to exaggerate his record on job creation.

October 28, 2011

At a press event this morning, Rep. Earl Blumenauer called out Republican candidate Rob Cornilles’ “politics as usual” strategy of hiding his extreme Tea Party record to try to appeal to moderate Oregonians.

October 19, 2011

Republican Tea Party candidate Rob Cornilles has avoided taking a clear a position on issue after issue, but most worrisome to Oregon seniors is his inability to fully explain where he stands on Social Security. He has already opened the door to private accounts, but Oregonians are still wondering whether he supports the other mainstream Republican proposal for Social Security – raising the eligibility age for future recipients.

October 14, 2011

Portland, Ore. -- Today, the Democratic Party of Oregon kicks off its biennial Oregon Summit, the premier political conference in the Pacific Northwest. The three-day event marks the unofficial launch of the 2012 elections, bringing together the state’s most dynamic and engaged community activists, elected officials, business leaders, aspiring candidates and Democratic supporters.

October 12, 2011

For months, Republican Tea Party candidate Rob Cornilles has talked circles around a straight answer on Medicare and Social Security. Now we know why: Cornilles believes in subjecting Oregon seniors to the mercies of Wall Street and the private insurance market.

October 11, 2011

After nearly two years spent running for political office, Tea Party Republican Rob Cornilles tried a new gimmick today to convince Oregonians he has even a single good idea for job creation – but once again, he fell flat. At a sparsely attended press event in Hillsboro, Cornilles marched out a few supporters he’s calling his “Jobs Team,” but predictably he failed to offer anything resembling a specific proposal for reducing unemployment in Oregon’s 1st district.

October 7, 2011

After rubbing elbows with Washington, DC Republicans this week, Tea Party candidate Rob Cornilles owes some answers to Oregon’s seniors -- Why hasn’t he rejected the radical House Republican plan to end Medicare? Will he join his Tea Party friends in Congress as they fight to privatize Social Security? There is a candidate forum at a Portland senior center tomorrow -- if they’re lucky, 1st district seniors might finally learn where Rob Cornilles stands.

August 19, 2011

Today Meredith Wood Smith, Democratic Party of Oregon Chair, is pleased to announce that all Democratic candidates running for the First Congressional District Special Election have pledged, in personal conversations with her, to run a positive campaign in the Democratic Special Primary.

June 30, 2011

The state of Oregon and the Democratic Party of Oregon have lost a great public servant in Betty Roberts. Her contributions to the state are manyfold and her legacy will be long lasting.

"She was a hero to the women of our state, both Republican and Democratic, and led the way for all of us" said Meredith Wood Smith. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family."

November 3, 2010

Last night Oregonians made a strong  stand by voting for their values and priorities. Oregon bucked national trends by electing Democrat John Kitzhaber as Governor and re-elected its entire Democratic Congressional delegation.

One thing was clear: Democrats won by having one-on-one conversations about the priorities and values that define Oregon.

October 26, 2010

Today NBA Hall of Fame star and former Presidential Candidate Bill Bradley endorses John Kitzhaber. Bradley said in his endorsement, "During these difficult economic times our country needs the kind of experience, candor and compassion that John Kitzhaber has demonstrated throughout his life of public service.  I am pleased to endorse his candidacy for Governor of Oregon."

RE: 10 Days to go – Democrat John Kitzhaber seizes Momentum

October 11, 2010

Chris Dudley is attempting to re-write his own words on minimum wage. For the first time in this campaign he’s been caught saying something and now he wants to go back to saying nothing.  Too bad for Chris Dudley, he was caught on camera agreeing that Oregon’s minimum wage is too high.  All of his money and his ads can’t hide the truth.

October 6, 2010

Let’s just get this part out of the way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNnAvTTaJjM

Today’s Willamette Week reports a curious tax deduction Chris Dudley claimed in 2004. First Dudley asked his local fire department to burn down a home he owned, then Dudley turned around and asked the IRS for a $350,000 deduction for the FULL value of that very same home.

October 5, 2010

Chris Dudley chose to ignore The Oregonian’s Candidate Questionnaire, showing that he intends to keep voters in the dark about his real policy beliefs.

Dudley is attempting to run a campaign based solely on platitudes and tired talking points, when he is specifically asked to answer questions.

October 5, 2010

Today The Oregonian reported that Chris Dudley has been making real estate investments “some of Portland's wealthiest power brokers.”

October 1, 2010

“Last night Kitzhaber showed Oregon why experience matters. Chris Dudley’s only idea is a tax break for the ultra wealthy. Dudley and George Bush must have had the same economics professor at Yale,” said Meredith Wood Smith, Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon. “John Kitzhaber laid out clear answers and a clear vision to move Oregon forward.”

The reviews are in:

September 30, 2010

After 3 hours of post debate analysis across the state, one person has been found willing to boldly declare Chris Dudley the winner: his campaign manager.

From their campaign facebook page:

The rest of the Dudley campaign has yet to comment.

September 28, 2010

Last Night Dudley and his campaign suggested that he doesn't want to lower Oregon's minimum wage. Unfortunately Chris Dudley cannot hide from his own words.

The facts are clear, and he cannot ignore the evidence.

September 23, 2010

Today Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Meredith Wood Smith joined Oregon Community leaders in asking the Fraud Team at the Oregon Department of Revenue to investigate what may have been an illegal attempt by Chris Dudley to evade paying Oregon taxes. That letter is attached here.

September 20, 2010

Chris Dudley has amped up his rhetoric and efforts to reduce Oregon’s minimum wage. Dudley, proclaiming the issue at the top of his post-inaugural agenda would be to reducing the minimum wage, saying:  “one area I would like to tackle first is to at least get a training wage.”

August 19, 2010

This week Chris Dudley’s campaign released a document that outlined what his vision for the state budget would be if elected.  We took a quick look at the release and then began to wonder what was really in the document. Upon further review we found nothing but regurgitated ideas and costly programs.

August 9, 2010

With Oregonians statewide celebrating the 75th anniversary of Social Security this Saturday, Scott Bruun’s support for privatizing this program and putting the financial futures of Oregon’s seniors into the hands of Wall Street traders is coming into focus.

In 1996, Bruun told The Oregonianthat the way to address the solvency of Social Security was “by slowly converting contributions into private investments, which will earn a much higher rate of return.”

July 27, 2010

Chris Dudley has already dodged a debate organized by Oregon newspapers - and now he is skipping a debate in front of Oregon's mayors.

July 26, 2010

Today, the Democratic Party of Oregon proudly launches our newly redesigned website.

This site will provide tools for supporters across the state to become more involved with local campaigns and to give them online access to candidates and elected officials. Democrats will now have a place to go to find all the democratic events happening in their community and around the state.

July 16, 2010

Statement from Meredith Wood Smith, Chair of the Democratic Party of Oregon announcing the release of 2010 DPO Party Platform:

July 16, 2010

Today, Chris Dudley decided to skip the debate hosted by the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association(OPNA) this debate has historically been the kick off to the general campaign. Dudley went on vacation instead. By skipping this opportunity to debate John Kitzhaber and discuss the important issues facing Oregonians, Dudley has signaled that he is not capable of addressing the issues or that he is going to attempt to run an issue-free campaign.

July 14, 2010

Last night in Washington County the Democratic Party held a nominating convention to fill the vacancy in House District 30. Doug Ainge won the nomination and now will continue on as the nominee for HD 30

July 13, 2010

Once again, Chris Dudley and his campaign team have gotten Oregon history wrong. Today, Dudley has again resorted to negative attacks, releasing a document selectively quoting news stories and attempting to rewrite Governor Kitzhaber’s term in office. This is not the first time Dudley has shown how little he relies on the facts, in May Dudley was also shown to get it wrong when he launches his negative attacks.

July 13, 2010

Chris Dudley has refused to join in a debate that Oregon’s gubernatorial candidates have participated in for almost 25 years.  Recentnews reports show that Chris Dudley has decided to skip a traditional debate sponsored by the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Associationin favor of vacation.

July 7, 2010

In a new campaign ad, Chris Dudley relies on an associate from his time in the financial industry to describe how he saw Dudley as “driven” and “focused” while they worked for what their firm described as the “ultra-affluent.” At Filigree the firm promised potential clients they would help them attain a “Home in Tuscany, a Winery in Santa Barbara” or whatever clients wanted for their “your family and your legacy.”

June 23, 2010

Dudley’s current campaign ad raises a few eyebrows with the use of children who attended a basketball camp hosted by his tax-exempt foundation.

Dudley certainly has a history of dancing along the legal line with his foundation, among the questionable activities he has filed with the IRS late, spent more than the takes in, and has failed to get properly licensed for events. Now he has decided to use his foundation, which enjoys a tax-exempt status, in his political campaign.

June 18, 2010

Oregon voters saw a clear contrast in the U.S. Senate race this week as Senator Ron Wyden succeeded in his efforts to protect compensation for victims of the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, while Republican candidate Jim Huffman declared his opposition to a new relief fund set up to help those affected by the disaster.

June 16, 2010

Last night, President Obama outlined the Administration’s ongoing response to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, including efforts to ensure that Gulf Coast businesses and residents are compensated for damages, and the steps the Administration will take to prevent future spills.

In his address, the President reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the BP oil spill is contained, cleaned up, and that BP assumes the responsibility to compensate individuals and businesses impacted by the spill.

June 16, 2010

Since Chris Dudley has reaffirmed his support for drilling off the Oregon coast, we were wondering if he could tell Oregonians how he would respond to a disaster like the BP spill in Oregon, or how he would guarantee that a tragedy would never happen to us.

June 14, 2010

This past weekend Chris Dudley toured the SolarWorld facility in Hillsboro, praising the company and stating that we needed more companies like them in Oregon. Yet weeks ago, Dudley was attacking SolarWorld as an “out of state energy company” at a forum for business leaders according to Oregon Business “Jobs Watch.”

June 14, 2010

The Democratic Party of Oregon announced the schedule of events for the 2010 State Party Platform Convention the weekend of June 25-27.  The Platform Convention is a biennial meeting of party members to adopt a platform for the DPO and perform other functions, as stipulated by the DPO bylaws.

The convention sessions will take place on the campus of Portland Community College-Willow Creek Center beginning Friday afternoon and concluding on Sunday June 27th.  During the Convention delegates will adopt a platform and a list of Legislative Action Items.

June 10, 2010

During an appearance on KGW’s Straight Talk, Chris Dudley once again dodged answering a question about budget cuts and what education programs he will eliminate.

June 9, 2010

Despite horrifying pictures from the disaster in the Gulf Coast, Chris Dudley once again offered his support for drilling along the Oregon Coast.

June 2, 2010

Chris Dudley hasn’t made a public campaign appearance since right after the primary - when he got Oregon history wrong and went on the attack with fabricated information.  Since that event, Dudley has avoided all public campaign appearances.

May 21, 2010

On the attack, Chris Dudley showed that once again he has no idea what he is talking about and completely bungled his assault on John Kitzhaber’s record. When Dudley was off his scripted remarks and questioned by reporters about his false attack, he couldn’t back up his accusation and had to turn to his campaign team to piece together an explanation of his inaccurate assertion.

May 20, 2010

Wrapping up the primary campaign, Democrat’s are in a strong position in the first days of the general election. John Kitzhaber carried all counties in Oregon, showing strong support across the state, support he has earned and valued for years. In 1998 Kitzhaber carried 35 of Oregon’s 36 counties.

Kitzhaber controlled his spending and has a healthy campaign account to start the campaign, while Chris Dudley burned through the $1.4 million dollars he raised leaving his campaign with less than $21,000.

May 18, 2010

As the general election campaign takes shape, the Democratic Party of Oregon is launching a new website -- www.DudleyDoLittle.com aimed at figuring out what Chris Dudley really stands for and what his vision for Oregon is.

May 18, 2010

“This fall, voters will have a clear choice between Kurt Schrader’s solid record of fighting for Oregon families and Scott Bruun’s history of putting his special interests and corporate friends ahead of Oregonians’ needs,” says Trent Lutz, Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Oregon.

May 4, 2010

Yesterday afternoon on the Lars Larson show, Chris Dudley offered his support for the Arizona racial profiling law that requires Arizona police officers to question any individual they suspect could be an residing here illegally. Dudley told Larson that the measure was “something that we could look at” when pressed about his stance on the Arizona law.

The Dudley campaign looks to be circling the wagons out of fear that voters might see the candidate stumble over questions and draw attention to his lack of credible policy positions.

April 26, 2010

The primary campaign is taking a toll on Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Dudley.  On Friday Dudley suggested that if he doesn’t win the campaign he might just leave Oregon.

What did Dudley tell Common Sense Oregon to gain their endorsement?

The Democratic Party of Oregon is curious if the conservative group Common Sense Oregon was let in on the big secret that candidate Dudley seems intent on keeping from Oregon voters.

What EXACTLY will you do for Oregon?

April 2, 2010

Today, the Labor Department released its March jobs report, showing that 162,000 jobs were created last month, the largest monthly jobs gain in three years.  In response to this news, Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Meredith Wood Smith released the following statement:

“This new jobs report shows clearly and without question that the policies put forth by President Obama and Democrats in Congress are working to bring our economy back from the brink and foster job creation and economic growth.

March 30, 2010
Earlier today, President Obama signed the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act, putting the country on track to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020.
March 23, 2010

Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Meredith Wood Smith issued the following statement following President Obama’s historic signing of comprehensive health insurance reform:

“Today, President Obama signed into law groundbreaking health reform that will lower costs for American families and small businesses, expand coverage to millions - something Presidents have tried to do for decades.  Oregonians should be proud of our Democratic members in Congress that fought hard and tackled one of the most difficult public-policy issues of modern times.

March 22, 2010

Today the Democratic Party of Oregon launched a statewide radio campaign advising Oregonians about the three-dollar political party check-off on their tax returns. For the first time since 1981 Oregonians have the option to donate three dollars of their state tax return to the state political party of their choice.

March 19, 2010

Today Chris Dudley released his first campaign ad in the governor’s race -- not surprisingly, it's perfectly in step with his campaign strategy of rehashing the same tired republican ideas that have failed Oregon and our country so miserably.

March 8, 2010

Democratic Party of Oregon Chair Meredith Wood Smith issued the following statement on the death of Ben Westlund:

March 5, 2010

GOP chairman Bob Tiernan has asked 2 Republican legislators to leave the party after committing the sin of—wait for it—considering an endorsement from law enforcement, health care workers and education employees.

AFSCME, the organization that represents nurses, corrections officers, child care providers, EMT’s and sanitation workers recently came to the aid to Republican Representatives Bob Jensen (R- Pendleton) and Greg Smith (R- Heppner) in their reelection campaigns.

March 4, 2010

Today the Democratic Party of Oregon launched the website www.MeetJimHuffman.com as a documented source for Oregonians to understand Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jim Huffman’s ultra-conservative values.

The website, which highlights the Republican candidate's ideology and positions using his own words, reflects how out of step Huffman is with Oregonians on key issues including reforming health care, reining in Wall Street greed, and protecting Social Security and the environment.

October 5, 2007

Chris Dudley chose to ignore The Oregonian’s Candidate Questionnaire, showing that he intends to keep voters in the dark about his real policy beliefs.

Dudley is attempting to run a campaign based solely on platitudes and tired talking points, when he is specifically asked to answer questions.
