New TV Ad: A Better Job Protecting Our Kids
Democratic Party of Oregon Urges Action
Portland - The Democratic Party of Oregon is airing a new TV ad urging Oregonians to call members of Congress and tell them we need to do a better job of protecting our children. Â
"With the rise of instant messaging, chat rooms, and social networking sites, we never really know who our children are talking to," DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith said. "Thatâ's why Democrats in Oregon led the charge to protect our children."
Oregon Democrats led the charge by:
• Cracking down on internet predators and giving police more tools to protect kids online.
[HB 2843, 2007; HB 3515, 2007; Statesman Journal, 12/28/07]
• Using the latest technology to track sex offenders and keep them away from our kids. Â
[HB 3511, 2006; The Oregonian, 4/25/06]
• Passing “the nation’s strictest anti-methamphetamine measure,†which created stiffer penalties for meth producers and restricted the availability of key meth ingredients.
[HB 2485, 2005; Governing Magazine, 10/05]
Democrats in Congress have aggressive plans to ensure our kids are safe, including:
• Increasing federal resources to prosecute meth producers.
• Increasing supervision of registered sex offenders.
• Strengthening child pornography laws.
• Requiring sex offenders to register their online identifiers.
• Criminalizing solicitation and harassment of children online.

Jeff Merkley:
Instant messaging. Chat Rooms. Social networking sites. We never really know who our children are talking to.
I'm Jeff Merkley, and that's why I passed one of the toughest Internet predator laws in the country, and supported new laws to keep track of sex offenders, and it is why we passed our nationally recognized law to battle the meth epidemic.
We need to do a better job of protecting our children.
